The 1851 London tournament is one of the most famous events in chess history, but at the same time, one of the least known. The first international chess tournament brought together some of the great players of the era, but it wasn't without controversy. The event was won by Adolf Anderssen, ahead of Wyvill, Staunton, Szen, Lowenthal etc Included in this updated edition are all 184 games from the main tournament, plus subsidiary events. Howard Staunton, the author, also describes the difficulties in organising such an event, the conflict between the organisers and the London Chess Club, as well as the controversial agreement between Szen and Anderssen over their prize money.

This historical reprint chronicles the birth of the modern chess tournament, but is also in itself, the first modern tournament book. A must have for any serious student of chess history.
